Warner TV enters German cable

The operators of digital TV platforms via cable networks and ADSL broadband networks in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland can provide their customers from now on with a digital video store featuring movies and TV series from Hollywood studio Warner Bros. Warner TV is offered by Video-on-Demand (VoD) provider On Demand Deutschland (ODD), which has signed a multiyear licence agreement with Warner Bros International Television Distribution.

ODD is a joint venture by German media company Tele Mnchen Gruppe, headed by movie rights dealer Herbert Kloiber, and Sea Change International, a US-based service provider for VoD solutions. The first customer to sign up for the new VoD service is Austrian telecommunications company Telekom Austria which will integrate Warner TV into the IPTV platform aonTV on its ADSL broadband networks.

aonTVs households will be able to access Warner Bros blockbusters, among them titles from the franchises Batman, Oceans Eleven, Lethal Weapon and National Lampoon. The series offered by Warner TV include Friends, ER, Nip/Tuck, Twilight Zone and Babylon 5.

It is expected in the industry that further platform operators currently provided with a VoD service by ODD will take the Warner service such as Kabel Deutschland and Unitymedia. Warner TV has so far only been available in Germany through maxdome, the online video store operated by ProSiebenSat.1 and United Internet,

Outside Germany, the service is already offered on a number of TV platforms: in the UK through BT, Virgin Media, Top Up TV and Tiscali, in France through Free, in Italy through Fastweb und in Japan through GyaO. Before year-end, India is expected to join the list.
