Operator preps first MoCA connected home deployment in Latin America

Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 17-08-2012

An undisclosed local operator in Brazil is rolling out Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) technology for service to launch by the end of August, according to Dataxis' NexTVLatAm publication.

MoCA enables multiscreen connected home offerings, supporting multiple streams of content - including HDTV, 3D, gaming and over the top content (OTT) - via an IP-over-coax connection to numerous in-home devices, including TVs, game consoles and PCs.
"The integration of products with MoCA technology enables the operator to remain competitive, offering a series of added value services such as multi-environment DVR, [and over the top services], in addition to Internet services through the use of the existing coaxial cable," Charles Cerino, MoCA's president, told Dataxis.
It has become the go-to wired technology for most cable and satellite operators in North America, according to ABI Research. Trials are underway in Western Europe as well--but this deployment will mark the first for Latin America.
MoCA is looking to up its presence in the region, and recently added MStar Semiconductor as a member, which has a significant footprint in Latin America. MStar provides chipsets for high volume consumer electronics markets, including TVs and set-top boxes (STBs). Headquartered in Taiwan, its global footprint is especially notable in Latin America and Europe, with a special push into emerging markets.
