Pakistan to tighten broadcast laws
October 30th, 2009 - 11:45 UTC
by Andy Sennitt.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has decided that laws enforced by the former President Pervez Musharraf on electronic media should be incorporated into the proposed Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Act of 2008, Dawn.com reports.

The Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Qamar Zaman Kaira, said yesterday that the ministry was under pressure to enforce laws to stop electronic media from showing programmes which caused confusion and uncertainty. “A committee comprising prominent journalists, law experts and intellectuals has been formed to chalk out a code of conduct,” he said.

Under the proposed amendments to the PEMRA law, no television channel will be allowed to broadcast footage of a suicide bomber, a terrorist, bodies of victims of terrorism, statements or pronouncements of extremists, militants and terrorists. The committee said programmes aired on some private TV stations “were not in conformity with the culture, traditions and ethics of the country”, The Nation reported.

It was also proposed that the committee should hold talks with owners of private TV channels, anchor persons and TV artists to inform them of the “grave situation emerging due to objectionable dramas, advertisements and their effects on society”.
