Possession, Hunger Games lead weekend video entertainment

Michelle Clancy | 03-09-2012

The demon-inside horror flick Possession is expected to rake in $17.7 million this week at the box office, according to Rentrak, while the Hunger Games is dominating on video-on-demand (VOD) platforms. Meanwhile, both the Avengers and the Dark Knight continue to earn their keep.

"We now have two summer films over the $1 billion mark in global box office," said Rentrak President of Theatrical Worldwide Ron Giambra. "Marvel's The Avengers hit the $1.5 billion plateau and The Dark Knight Rises stands at slightly over $1 billion."
For the weekend, Possession is far and away the winner, with the next closest take coming in at just $9.7 million, for the film Lawless. The other expected top dogs are Expendables 2 ($8.8 million), the Bourne Legacy ($7.2 million), ParaNorman ($6.6 million), the Odd Life Of Timothy Green ($6.1 million), the Dark Knight Rises ($5.9 million), the Campaign ($5.4 million), 2016 Obama's America ($5.1 million), Hope Springs ($4.7 million), Premium Rush ($3.9 million) and Hit And Run ($2.6 million).
On the home entertainment front, the Hunger Games was followed by the Dictator and Dr. Seuss' The Lorax.
The company issued its worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of 2 September, which uses overnight theatre-level reporting across the global theatrical market. Coupled with the official reported data, studios are able to analyse admissions and gross results in more than 50 territories.
