RTM Introduces New Channel On Astra - 09-March-2009, 15:28

KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 (Bernama) -- Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) is introducing a new channel featuring 24 hours entertainment programmes called Muzik Aktif on channel 180 of pay TV station Astro from Thursday.

Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said it was being introduced in preparation of RTM going digital by 2012, besides serving as a platform for local creative works to be promoted abroad.

"I hope it will also reinvigorate the arts and music industries in Malaysia,: he told a press conference at Angkasapuri here Friday.

Ahmad Shabery said Muzik Aktif had been put on a trial run since June 1 2006 under RTM's pioneer digitalisation project.

He said with Muzik Aktif in place, it would help the broadcaster fine tune its digital operations.

"We are targeting a viewership of 2 million from Astro's subscribers until RTM's digitalisation infrastructure is fully in place. Thereafter it will become a free channel," he said.

Muzik Aktif will feature video clips of local singers covering the various genres, languages, cultures and ethnic groups in Malaysia.

It will be officially launched on March 16.

Ahmad Shabery also said his ministry would be hosting the Creative Industry Conference 2009 on March 16 and 17 which will involve broadcast industry players like policy makers, content and technology suppliers locally and from abroad.

"The industry only contributes to 0.1 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product. In advance countries, export of dramas, films, music and art works contribute about seven per cent of their GDP," he said.

Some 500 participants including students from higher educational institutions apart from the industry players are expected to take part in the conference themed "Creative Industry:A New Dimension of Economic Growth). An exhibition of RTM's digitalisation process will also be held in conjunction with the conference.
