Samsung connected TV integrates Verizon FiOS app

Michelle Clancy | 10-08-2012

U.S. telco giant Verizon Communications has become the first pay-TV operator in the United States to provide a native app for FiOS TV within the Samsung Media Hub, so subscribers can stream the IPTV service directly to compatible Samsung Smart TVs and Smart Blu-ray players, no set-top box required.

"By broadening accessibility through Smart TV applications, Verizon FiOS is providing consumers more flexibility for where they want to locate their Samsung Smart TV within their home without the need for a set-top box," said Eric Anderson, vice president of content and product solutions at Samsung Electronics America.
Verizon subscribers can watch 26 live FiOS TV channels, including CNN, MTV, HBO, TBS, TNT, Food Network and HGTV and others based on the subscriber's current FiOS TV package, and more than 20,000 FlexView on-demand movies and TV shows. Verizon is billing the service as part of a TV Everywhere intiative.
Via FlexView, FiOS customers can buy or rent titles and watch them on the TV, PC or mobile device, and now compatible Samsung devices.
There's an over-the-top (OTT) play as well: FiOS Internet subscribers can take advantage of the app to stream the service, regardless of whether they are FiOS TV customers.
"TV Everywhere Applications like this new FiOS TV app push the boundaries of content delivery to meet consumer demand for more control, choice and access to their favorite content," said Anderson.
"Verizon is committed to delivering the best possible viewing experience to the multiple devices that our customers already own and use," said Maitreyi Krishnaswamy, director of product development for FiOS TV. "We are continuing to develop more ways for our customers to enjoy their FiOS TV experience on their own terms, meeting the needs of their borderless lifestyle."
The FiOS TV application has parent friendly features such as parental PIN options to restrict mature content as well as a purchase PIN requirement for authorisation of any rental and purchases of VOD content through the application. The application also offers traditional features such as closed captioning, help and FAQs.
