Satellite TV continues to grow in Germany

Jrn Krieger | 05-09-2012

DTH satellite television has managed to increase its reach in Germany despite analogue switch-off on 30 April 2012: 17.6 million households used a satellite dish as their main TV reception method in mid-2012 (end of 2011: 17.5 million).

Thus, almost 100,000 new households opted for DTH satellite. In contrast, the reach of cable television dropped in the first six months of the year to 17.0 million households (end of 2011: 17.3 million).

2.0 million households used DTT as their main reception method on 30 June 2012 (end of 2011: 1.8 million) while the number of IPTV households rose from 1.3 to 1.4 million.

The figures are taken from the current "TV-Monitor" market research company TNS Infratest has compiled for satellite operator Astra Deutschland. In contrast to the "digitalisation report" released by the German media authorities which considers all reception methods used by a household, the "TV-Monitor" focuses on the main reception infrastructure chosen by each household, in most cases serving the large TV set in the living room.

"We can be very content with these figures," said Wolfgang Elser, managing director of Astra Deutschland. "In early 2012, there were still 1.8 million analogue satellite households which had to opt for a digital upgrade or a different reception method by the end of April. A decrease of our reach could therefore have well been possible. In this difficult environment we managed to convince viewers of the advantages of digital satellite reception - and even expanded our reach."

The main TV trend remains high-definition television: On 30 June, 7.2 million satellite households in Germany watched HD channels, corresponding with a share of 41% (end of 2011: 34%). Many consumers apparently chose HDTV straight away in the analogue switch-off process.
