Scripps pulls HGTV/Food from New York - 05-January-2010, 07:05

Some 3m New York (and New Jersey/Connecticut) subscribers to Cablevision’s system lost their popular HGTV and Food Network channels at midnight on Dec 31. The squabble is over carriage fees.
Viewers switching on to either HGTV or the Food Network, both generated by Scripps Networks, see an on-screen message saying: “We wanted to keep bringing you these channels. We apologize for the inconvenience.Cablevision has tried to reach a fair agreement."

Industry sources suggest that Scripps is getting about 9c per subscribing home, per month. And Scripps wants more. Some popular cable channels (and HGTV and Food are undoubtedly popular) receive around 12c a month, and Scripps is seeking an uplift to its monthly carriage fees.

Cablevision said in a statement: "We are sorry that Scripps' current financial difficulties are making it impossible for them to continue our relationship on terms that are reasonable for Cablevision and our customers. We wish Scripps well and have no expectation of carrying their programming again, given the dramatic changes in their approach to working with distributors to reach television viewers."

Scripps said that its own research amongst Cablevision viewers generated data which valued its channels as each being worth considerably more than 50c per month, per channel (Food Network at $1.03, and HGTV at 73c a month).

A Scripps exec added: "The rates we are seeking represent a very modest increase when you consider that Food Network and HGTV are among the top networks in all of cable. Even with the rate reset we've proposed, about 35 other networks will be receiving higher fees per subscriber than these viewer favorites."

The response from Cablevision is not good, with a statement saying: “We wish Scripps well and have no expectation of carrying their programming again, given the dramatic changes in their approach to working with distributors to reach television viewers."
