Singapore scientists aim to extend TV with cloud

Louise Duffy | 13-08-2012

Scientists at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have unveiled "Social Cloud TV", a multi-screen mobile TV experience.
Developed by a research team headed by Assistant Professor Wen Yonggang, "Social Cloud TV" users can also chat - using video, voice or text - with their friends on the platform, as well as share their content on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
They can access content that is stored locally, in the cloud, delivered via over-the-top (OTT) services or shared using a web browser on a smart TV or mobile device. Professor Wen and his team developed the backend processes - such as a compression algorithm and media transcoding - so that content is optimised for each device and screen size.
For example, the same video that a user watches on their tablet can be "thrown" to their TV when they get home. Similarly, when they leave the house, they can "pull" content from their TV to a tablet or smartphone. Chat sessions can be transferred too.
This mobile social TV experience has already attracted the attention of both local and international telecoms companies who have expressed interest in integrating their technology into their existing cable networks as a market differentiator for cable television and mobile networks. It is expected that the technology will be live in about two years time.
To further improve and commercialise the technology, Professor Wen will be setting up a start-up company to seek additional funding and to collaborate on projects with industry partners.
