Sky tees up James Cameron for 3D Ryder Cup coverage

Editor | 10-09-2012

In a move that may give 3D TV a much needed shot in the arm, BSkyB has joined forces with CAMERON | PACE Group (CPG) to offer live 3D coverage of the forthcoming Ryder Cup gold tournament.

The service from the legendary Hollywood film director James Cameron and Vince Pace, huge proponents of 3D and whose recent ambition is to make it a reality for the TV industry, will show more than 30 hours of live coverage. It comes two years on from the launch of Sky 3D, Europes only dedicated 3D channel, which launched with live 3D coverage of the previous Ryder Cup from Celtic Manor in Newport in 2010.

Attracting more than a quarter of a million Sky customers since launch, the Sky 3D channel has shown live 3D coverage of the US Masters golf tournament in 2011 and 2012 and eleven other sports in 3D including Premier League Football, UEFA Champions League Final and Aviva Premiership Rugby Union. Yet it is not disputed that 3D growth in general has been poor, with services in general dogged by perceptions of poor quality, high cost sand lacking ease of use, socially in the case of having to wear specialist 3D glasses. Indeed there was a dearth of 3D services and innovations at this years IBC.

Undeterred, John Cassy, Director, Sky 3D, claims that the channel will build on what he called a spectacular summer of sport. "3D brings an entirely new perspective to watching golf. It picks out all the changes of height and distance on a golf course and makes them real, enabling 3D viewers to get a real sense of perspective of the undulating greens, sloping fairways and the depth of the galleries. Its great to be able to mark the second anniversary of Sky 3D with live coverage of one of the biggest events in sport, Cassy said.

Were looking forward to working in partnership with Sky to deliver truly outstanding 3D coverage of The Ryder Cup," added Avatar and Titanic director James Cameron, co-chairman of CAMERON | PACE Group (CPG) "Drawing on CAMERON | PACE Group's global expertise in live 3D sports production, Skys coverage will offer 3D viewers an exhilarating perspective on the one of the worlds most popular sporting events.
