Sony gets social to launch new era of media consumption

Editor RapidTVNews | 20-11-2011

Sony DADC's LOOT division has entered into a series of strategic partnerships with leading digital media companies to, in it is opinion, bring entertainment and social networking together like never before.
Sony DADC New Media Solutions provides digital supply chain solutions and will leverage its assets to bring a virtual world experiences to feature films, television, radio, and live events to Sony Computer Entertainment America's PlayStation Home social game platform.

"The PlayStation Home platform provides an opportunity to change the way people interact with online media," explained David Sterling, VP business development at Sony DADC. "We [will] bring familiar social experiences from the real world into a virtual environment, so people around the globe can connect and communicate with each other while sharing their favourite movie, show, music, or event. This is the next big step in social networking and it will transform the way people consume media."
PlayStation Home users will be able to share the experience of the platform's Entertainment on Demand (EOD) system with content provided by leading online media companies, including Crackle and Ustream.
Available on PlayStation Home since November 2010, Crackle is a multi-platform video entertainment network features full-length Hollywood movies and television shows plus. All Crackle content will now be available on the social platform

The Ustream offers real-time interactivity around live broadcasted shows network and features online lifecasting and live video streaming produced by more than 12,500,000 registered users. PlayStation Home will now feature a broad range of live Ustream events with content available in both public and personal LOOT spaces.

Is good to have such kind of media integration, but I think Sony lost an important application to be part of the Playstation ,SKYPE !
Now that MS bought Skype it looks almost impossible to have a version for Playstation. Maybe Google Talk can be one solution to have a global communication tool, but until now nothing for video, voice communication.
It might happen that SONY can develop a proprietary soft to run only in the Playstation allowing all people owing it to communicate with each other ,but the communication footprint is much larger than Playstation market.
In my opinion the XBOX will leave behind the Playstation in the near future.

to share, or not to share, that's the question
