Spain's new DTT channels - 05-January-2010, 06:59

Spain's Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce is waiting for national analogue switch off on April 3 to add three new multiplexes to the country's digital-terrestrial platform.

National public broadcaster RTVE will receive a complete new mux, giving the broadcaster two muxes in total, meaning 8 digital channels. National private broadcasters Mediaset's Telecinco, Sogecable's Cuatro, Grupo Planeta's Antena 3 and Mediapro's laSexta will also have a complete mux meaning four digital channels each.

RTVE plans to launch a cultural channel Canal Cultura and HDTV channel TVE HD. The former already broadcasts on cable and satellite while the latter is at the testing stage.

Mediapro could launch a sports pay-DTT channel, a version of its already-existing soccer channel Gol TV but focused on news, or family channel Hogar 10.

Sogecable could launch Canal+ on the DTT platform while Antena 3 has a licence for Ver-T, a children's channel according to some market sources. Another option is for all the national broadcasters to have an HD DTT channel that will transmit simulcast programminf but this possibility seems far away for the moment. There is currently just one HD channel being screened by the major broadcasters but that, Gol TV HD, only exists on cable.

From the new DTT operator waiting for a licence Dahlia TV -whose business model is based on a low cost and on-demand pay-DTT- it could launch Sony's AXN, an adult channel and some cinema and TV series channels
