Spreadtrum acquires analogue mobile TV firm Telegent Systems - 20-July-2011, 21:00

Editor RapidTVNews | 19-07-2011

Long the defiant last man standing in analogue mobile TV, Telegent Systems has signed a definitive agreement to be bought by fabless semiconductor provider Spreadtrum Communications.

The acquisition is designed to expand patent and product portfolio with advanced mobile TV technology for the Chinese firm who specialises in technology in both 2G and 3G wireless communications standards.

Telegent's product line consists of analogue mobile TV ICs, hybrid analog/digital mobile TV ICs, mobile TV internal antenna technology, TV player software, and entertainment services software that enables the delivery of applications and advertising to handsets post-sale. In June 2011, Telegent launched its fifth generation TLG12xx family of analogue mobile TV receivers which were claimed to be the first to offer an analogue mobile TV solution to integrate broadcast television with data-delivered entertainment, with an internal antenna that streamlines handset design.

Following the acquisition, Spreadtrum will explore integration opportunities with the baseband that deliver further performance and cost benefits. Hardware and software engineers from Telegent's Shanghai office will join Spreadtrum.

Explaining the rationale for the deal, Dr. Leo Li, president and chief executive officer of Spreadtrum, said: Broadcast mobile TV is a popular feature with consumers in emerging markets, which is a target market segment for Spreadtrum and one in which we are experiencing rapid growth...The acquisition of Telegent enhances the value proposition we can deliver to the supply chain serving this market segment from handset manufacturer to end market brand and accelerates our international footprint."
