Suddenlink rolls whole-home DVR for TiVo Premiere

Michelle Clancy RapidTVNews | 17-12-2011

Subscribers of US cable MSO Suddenlink Communications that have TiVo Premiere hooked up to their TV sets can now enjoy whole-home DVR functionality, including the ability to pause a show on one set and resume it on another. Also, each Premiere box can record two shows at the same time, and the service offers up to 600 hours of recording time. The country's seventh-largest cable company, Suddenlink rolled out the TiVo Premiere in late 2010 as part of a strategy to offer its 1.3 million residential customers in Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia a way to blend online video, the MSO's own VOD library, and linear TV service in one DVR offering, with an integrated search mechanism for content discovery. It has full HD support, and like any TiVo offers the ability to pause and rewind live TV.
TiVo Premiere also offers users apps for the iPhone and iPad that provide remote scheduling and program guides.
While the TiVo Premiere box itself is available from the company directly without a cablco, there are differences in the functionality. The direct-to-consumer version obviously doesn't provide cable VOD, but does add Netflix and Amazon streaming, both of which are blocked in the cable-delivered version.
Suddenlink isn't alone in embracing TiVo Premiere: RCN Charter has launched in Washington D.C. and other markets, and rival Charter Communications is rolling it out in Texas.
"Charter sought to remain competitive in a rapidly changing pay-TV market with an abundance of choices, and turned to TiVo because of our superior user interface and reputation as the leading provider of these offerings," said David Sandford, vice president and general manager of TiVo's service provider business. "With today's launch, Charter's customers can now engage with traditional television, broadband-delivered content and video on demand in a package unlike anything they've had access to before, and view this through a whole-home-capable solution, enabling a truly first-class television viewing experience."
