TataSky wins complaint against Airtel - 12-January-2010, 11:10

India's Advertising Standards Council (ASCI) has upheld a complaint made by DTH operator TataSky against arch-rival Airtel Digital TV.
The grumble started back in November 2009 when an Airtel campaign implied that its picture quality (MPEG4 and DVB-S2 transmission) was better than that used by others. TataSky was not specifically mentioned but it uses MPEG2. Last week ASCI found in TataSky's favour and has asked that Airtel modify or withdraw its campaign.
However, the ruling is just the tip of an iceberg in terms of legal point-scoring and intense competition amongst the nation's half dozen DTH rivals. In 2008 TataSky used the Monopolies & Restrictive Practices Commission to rule on rival Dish TV (backed by Zee) and arguing that its ads promising ‘free' set-top boxes was misleading and deceptive.
But the Indian DTH numbers are huge. India's ‘Business Standard' newspaper states the six DTH players, are selling on average around 18,000-20,000 DTH connections each day, with Airtel Digital TV alone selling over 7,000 connections, higher than some of its rivals. "We are selling 200,000 DTH connections each month," confirmed Airtel Digital TV CEO Ajay Puri. Tata Sky, which is now the third-largest DTH operator behind Dish TV and Sun Direct, is adding over 100,000 subscribers per month. "Till November 2009, our subscriber base stood at 4.5 million ...on a monthly basis, we have been selling far more than 100,000 subscribers," Vikram Mehra, CMO at Tata Sky said.
