Telstra to offer telephone and internet services in India

Louise Duffy RapidTVNews | 04-11-2011

Australian telco Telstra is to start offering long-distance telephone and internet services in India by spring 2012.
Its international subsidiary Telstra Telecommunications Private Limited (TTPL) has been awarded international long distance, national long distance and internet service provider licences. TTPL is owned by Telstra International (74%) and an Indian company, Microland (26%).
Mumbai and Chennai will be the companys international gateways, linking into an international fibre network with direct routes into Europe and Asia.
Group managing director Tarek Robbiati said the licences would enable Telstra International to offer telecoms services across Asia as it looked for contracts with companies expanding into India, and Indian companies expanding into other regions.

This development reinforces our foothold as an Asian network specialist and communications service provider with offices and licences in 12 Asia-Pacific countries, Robbiati said in a statement.

Todays announcement demonstrates Telstras ongoing commitment to invest in India."

In 1995 Telstra launched a mobile network in India with BK Modi group, but the network was later sold.
