TNT To End 'The Closer' In 2011
Drama Series To Produce Seventh, Final Season Next Spring
by R. Thomas Umstead -- , 12/10/2010 2:50:02 PM

TNT will end its popular and long-running seriesThe Closer with a seventh and final season in 2011, the network announced Friday.

The decision to end the series was made by and Emmy Award-winning actress and The Closer star Kyra Sedgwick. The series, which has been the most-watched scripted drama series ever on cable since it launched in 2005, is currently finishing up its sixth season.

The Closer, produced for TNT by The Shephard/Robin Company, in association with Warner Bros. Television

will reach its 100th episode during its 15-episode finale season, production of which will start this spring.

This past summer, The Closer served as a lead-in for freshman drama series Rizzoli and Isles, with each averaging more than 8 million viewers, when DVR was factored in.

"It's impossible to fully express our appreciation to Kyra Sedgwick, series creator James Duff and all of the other talented people who brought The Closer to TNT viewers," said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks in a statement. "The Closer was a pivotal series in setting a new course for TNT's original programming, while also serving as a prime example of the storytelling strength possible on cable television."

Sedgwick won a 2010 Emmy for best actress in a TV drama for her portrayal of tough Los Angeles deputy chief Brenda Johnson. "I cannot fathom how difficult it will be to say goodbye to the incredible family we've created on The Closer," Sedgwick said in a statement.
