UKTV bolsters on demand offerings

Editor | 07-09-2012

In the wake of the launch of similar services on YouView and Freesat to keep up with those announced by BSkyB, BT and Virgin, on demand is now the standard for British TV, and the latest move into VOD has been made by UKTV.

As a first step, the independent television network, co-owned by BBC Worldwide and Scripps Networks International, and which has recently inked VOD agreements with TalkTalk, BT Vision and Sky Anytime, plans to launch bespoke VOD services for its three free-to-air channels: Dave, Yesterday and Really. This will see shows such as Red Dwarf X, Suits and Dara OBriain: School of Hard Sums on Dave; Museum Secrets, Mafias Greatest Hits and Fight Club: A History of Violence on Yesterday; and Hart of Dixie and Embarrassing Bodies made available on Really.

Dave and Yesterday will launch in early October. Both channels will undergo a beta testing period, enabling viewers to provide feedback before they fully launch later this year. Lifestyle channel Really will follow suit in late October.

Commented Darren Childs, CEO UKTV: UKTV is investing more money in content than ever before and it is important we are servicing our viewers by enabling them to access Dave, Yesterday and Really directly for the very first time, through our On Demand Players - three vibrant and curated, direct to viewer, player services. Part catch-up and part-archive, On Demand will offer the best of these populist channels whether catching up on the brand new Red Dwarf X at Dave On Demand, or watching the top-rating factual series Museum Secrets all over again on Yesterday On Demand.
