Ultra high definition expected in Spain in two years

Iaki Ferreras RapidTVNews | 23-06-2012

Ultra high definition (Ultra HD) is not a dream, but a reality that is expected to see the light in Spain in about two years.

The price of screens is expected to decline, in a similar way to what occurred with high definition, and the industry believes that Ultra HD in turn will promote autostereoscopic 3D technology (without glasses) at home.

This is one of the conclusions drawn by Luis Sahn, SES Astra Spains CEO, at the recent Iberian Meeting of the Telecommunication and Information Society, organised by IESE. Sahn has been involved in the panel meeting in Emerging Business Models and Employment Creation, which also involved representatives from Ericsson and Cisco Systems.

This is a field in which, according to SES, the satellite has and will have much to contribute.

"Today is clearly the big moment of HD," said Sahn. "The need for bandwidth has increased to what is already a common way to watch TV and not a rare exception. Viewers have embraced the excellent quality of these images. With Ultra HD, this need for bandwidth will multiply. The satellite continues to provide the best combination of cost-effectiveness and technical quality to ensure the distribution of TV content.

"We went to a multi-screen environment, which requires any content, any time, and anywhere."

Except in some urban areas wired with Fiber Optic Hybrid solution, the satellite provides sustainability to the connected TV and solves the problem of bandwidth, coverage and location of users.

SES is developing industrial sector agreements, a complete "ecosystem" that allows hybrid solutions, and provides a satisfactory experience of smart TV without the expense of quality - a combination that blends the best of the satellite with the best of terrestrial IP distribution to enhance the experience of TV consumption to the end user.
