ANGA gives go-ahead for merger

German cable association Verband Deutscher Kabelnetzbetreiber (ANGA) has cleared the way for the planned merger with fellow cable association Deutscher Kabelverband.

At the recent meeting of ANGA's members the vast majority opted for the new association structure integrating Kabel Deutschland, Unitymedia and Kabel BW. Germany's 3 largest cable operators have until now been members of Deutscher Kabelverband, while ANGA mainly represented medium sized companies such as PrimaCom, Tele Columbus and wilhelm.tel. Kabel BW was a member of both associations.

ANGA believes the fusion will create a new heavyweight amongst media and telecommunications industry associations. "The cable branch is bundling its strength in order to meet its joint interests more powerfully in the future. Small, medium and large cable operators will profit equally", said ANGA president Thomas Braun.

Under the new structure, ANGA represents around 19 million cable households under various network levels, with a further one million households with internet access and more than 700,000 telephone customers. The association will operate from offices in Bonn and Berlin and will be headed by ANGA's current managing director Peter Chariss and, from May, Ralf Heublein, currently managing director of Deutscher Kabelverband.
