BBC makes major web promise

360-degree commissioning means that the BBC is already looking to a multi-tiered approach to content. Now Jana Bennett, the BBCs Director of Vision has considerably extended that commitment.

Bennett told an audience of TV executives at the Banff TV Festival that the BBC intends creating web-pages for each and every BBC show ever made, and spanning 80 years of TV production at least where content still lives somewhere in the BBC archive. The project has already seen the BBC create 160,000 individual web-pages over the past three months, but the target is to embrace material going back to 1930.

"Eventually we will add our programme back catalogue to produce pages for programming stretching back over nearly 80 years - featuring all the information we have on the richest TV and radio archive in the world," said Bennett. "The BBC is committed to releasing the public value in that archive and these pages are going to play a central role in allowing us to do that."

Data to be included in the core page would tell viewers where the show could be seen. These permanent pages will always direct the audience to the programme - wherever it may be on the web - first in iPlayer, then elsewhere on bbc.co.uk, or on iTunes, or on any number of other on demand services including Kangaroo [the upcoming commercial on-line service being developed by the BBC, ITV and Channel 4]," she added.
