Deutsche Telekom names winner of Interactive TV Award

Deutsche Telekom has announced the winner of its Interactive TV Award, which offers developers the chance to win 1mn in prize money and see their IPTV application launched on the telco's IPTV service 'T-Home Entertain'.

At a meeting in Microsoft's German headquarters in Unterschleissheim near Munich, the developers Trenfield/Regner were revealed to be the winners with their concept 'PIN- an Instant Information System', which enables viewers to immediately and directly access information about 'things to have, ' people to know' or 'places to be', without interrupting the programming being viewed.

The two other finalists were creamBOTS with their 'Live Media Recommendation Network' concept, enabling viewers to evaluate films as they are screened and give a rating, and 3-frogs, whose 'FamilenFun' idea is intended to enable the viewer to share relevant content with their family and friends such as news, photos and videos, and to keep a common calendar. Both runners up receive 200,000 in prize money.

The awards were entered by 105 national and international candidates, with the jury shortlisting ten preliminary round participants and then selecting three finalists. The jury was made up of an external team of specialists from TV, IT and the media, including Achim Berg, General Manager of Microsoft Deutschland, Prof. Dr. Thomas Hess, Director of the Institute for Information Systems and New Media, LMU Munich, and Christian P. Illek, T-Home Management Board Member.

Deutsche Telekom was recently reported to be aiming to reach 500,000 subscribers for T-Home Entertain by the end of last year, compared to 333,000 customers for the service at the end of last September. T-Home Entertain offers around 150 linear channels, a VOD store, TV archive, fixed-line telephony and broadband access, and costs from 49.95 per month.
