Dubai show generates satellite biz

Dubais increasingly important CabSat show generated some chunks of news yesterday from the satellite sector (see also the Harris story).

Two deals revolved around German-Saudi Arabia j-v Detasad (Detecon Al Saudia Co Ltd) taking capacity on SES New Skies Satellite and Intelsat. Detasad, based in Riyadh, is licensed to operate in Saudi Arabia and provides B2B links to satellites as well as communications services within the Kingdom, and the surrounding region.

SES New Skies has sold 36 MHz of capacity on the upcoming NSS-12 craft, likely to come into operation later this year, and which will replace the existing NSS-703, to Detasad.

Detasad has also taken bandwidth from Intelsat. Intelsat says it signed a multi-year contract for Ku-band capacity on Intelsats new IS-15 craft which will be located at 85E when it is launched later this year.

Detasad says it will use this capacity to provide additional Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) transmission services to its small and medium enterprise, government and maritime customers throughout the Middle East.

Meanwhile, SES Astra confirmed the story we carried last week, which talked about GlobeCast launching a new DTH platform over Africa. SES Astra has sold a transponder on its Astra 4A craft (at 5 deg East) to GlobeCast. GlobeCasts first client for this new service VoxAfrica.

GlobeCast will use the capacity to extend its pan-African reach for worldwide broadcasters seeking to launch a powerful Ku-band DTH services to address key African countries throughout the region, said a release.
