Eutelsat in 3D satellite demo

March 20, 2009 | 08:33 UK

Eutelsat Communications is participating in an end-to-end demonstration of 3D technology. The broadcast, using capacity on the Eutelsat Eurobird 3 (33 degrees East) satellite, captures a live music performance that is then transmitted and projected in stereo 3D-HD on a cinema screen and on prototype models of stereo 3D-HD television sets at the Sat Expo Europe 2009 international conference and exhibition in Rome (March 19-21).

The three dimensional shooting and production is being managed by Rome-based production company dBW while encoding, OpenSky is handling decoding and projection. The two companies have agreed with Eutelsat to provide end-to-end 3D services in Europe.

Giuliano Berretta, Eutelsat CEO said the broadcasts marked a new step in Eutelsats long-standing commitment to innovation. Early and close collaboration between all actors in the broadcasting chain will be a key success factor for this new broadcasting revolution and we are very pleased to be taking part in the first tests and end-to-end demonstrations in Europe.

It has been revealed that Eutelsat has been transmitting a 3D test channel on Eurobird 9A (9 degrees East) for the last three months, using the satellite as a testbed to analyse the performance of screens, encoders and decoders.
