Godwin named director of BBC Children's

Monday, September 28 2009,

The BBC has announced that Joe Godwin will become the next director of BBC Children's, leading the division to its new base at Salford Quays.

Starting in 1986, Godwin's career at the BBC has taken in various aspects of children's media and programming, including producing Blue Peter and directing morning show Going Live.

After moving to Nickelodeon and spending five years as its head of original production, Godwin returned to the corporation in 2005, with his most recent role being head of entertainment and also executive producer of BAFTA award-winning show The Slammer and Chucklevision.

He will move into the new position in November and replace Richard Deverell, who is being promoted to chief operating officer of the BBC North operation at Salford Quays. Godwin will also lead the transition of the BBC Children's team to BBC North in 2011.

Under the new arrangement, CBBC controller Damian Kavanagh and CBeebies controller Michael Carrington will still directly oversee all children's content and report directly to Godwin.

"The BBC's children's services are the cornerstone of the BBC and Joe Godwin's 20 years of experience working in children's media makes him the ideal candidate to build on the reputation of BBC Children's and lead the team to its new home as the creative heart of BBC North," said BBC Vision director Jana Bennett.

BBC North director Peter Salmon added: "Joe has emerged as one of the outstanding creative leaders of Children's BBC. His commitment and skill in serving young audiences convinced us he was the right person to lead the service through a crucial next period as we move to our new digital home at BBC North. BBC Children's will sit at the heart of the strong line up there. Joe has shown great commitment to and leadership around improving diversity - both on screen and in terms of staffing.

"We are immensely lucky too that he will take up the reins from Richard Deverell, who leaves BBC Children's in outstanding shape to face its many challenges but remains close as chief operating officer for BBC North. We are assembling a formidable team and Joe will be a wonderful addition, bringing with him a passion to serve young audiences on all our platforms."

Also commenting on the announcement, Godwin said: "As someone who joined the department 20 years ago as a trainee, I can't think of a more exciting challenge, or greater honour, than to lead the brilliant people who make Cbeebies and CBBC. The fact that we're soon to become part of BBC North in Salford makes it even more exciting."

BBC Children's announced last week that it will launch a new Red Button interactive service for CBeebies, offering new games and features aimed at children under 6.
