Hispasat selects Arianespace for 1E

Spain's satellite operator Hispasat has chosen Arianespace for the launch of its 1E satellite. The new spacecraft, costing over 200 million will allow the company to increase its space capacity and at the same time to consolidate its 30 W strategy.

Launching from the French Guyana space centre belonging to Arianespace, an Ariane 5 vehicle will carry out the operation.

The 1E satellite will be launched at the end of 2010 and will be manufactured by Space Systems/Loral over a LS 1300 platform. The new satellite will transport 53 simultaneous transponders in the Ku band and its payload will be 5.270 Kg. It will have 15 years of useful life and will cover either Spain and America. But its coverage will be extended over Europe, North Africa and America with an optimized coverage over the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary islands.

This launch means the renewal of the confidence from Hispasat towards Arianespace which already launched the 1A and 1B satellites in 1992 and 2003 respectively. In 2005 and 2006, through Hisdesat, Hispasat counted on Arianespace for the launch of the XTAR-Eur and Spainsat satellites. This year Arianespace will launch the Amazonas 2 satellite for America.

According to Petra Mateos, Hispasat's president: "With this contract our company advances in its plan for growth and extension orientated to consolidating its competitive position as a satellite leader operator in Spain and Portugal's market".
