Turkey's media watchdog gives permission for test IPTV transmissions
Turkey's media watchdog, the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has given permission for the commencement of test transmissions by prospective IPTV operators, provided that they comply with certain requirements.
After satisfying preliminary requirements, prospective Turkish IPTV operators will be give permission by the RTÜK to start test transmissions for a period of one year, whilst remaining compliant with the same broadcasting principles as normal TV broadcasts. At a meeting on January 15th, the council started preparing the legal groundwork needed for IPTV broadcasts, as well as for the introduction of other broadcasting technologies such as DVB-H, DVB-T and DVB-T2.
Prospective local IPTV operators include Türk Telekom, which awarded SeaChange the contract to build its IPTV infrastructure in May 2008, which SeaChange will develop in partnership with Türk Telekom's subsidiary Argela. Türk Telekom had previously hoped to launch an IPTV service before end-2008, but this is now expected for 2009.
