ZBH suspends three for leaking information
November 12th, 2009 - 11:04 UTC
by Andy Sennitt.

Three employees of the state-controlled Zimbabwe Broadcasting Holdings (ZBH), were suspended for leaking information on a government directive to stop covering functions of cabinet ministers who are members of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

OBrien Rwafa, Jacob Phiri and Freedom Moyo were last week suspended for 10 days each after they were accused of leaking the information that a directive had been issued to the broadcaster to desist from covering government ministers appointed by the MDC led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.

Misa Zimbabwe said Messrs Rwafa, Phiri and Moyo, employed as news editor, chief producer and bulletins manager respectively, were suspended on full salary pending investigations. They were ordered to surrender all ZBH property.

ZBH Chief Executive Happison Muchechetere refused to comment on the suspensions. He was, however, reported as being responsible for the directive which ordered managers at the state broadcaster to take all stories pertaining to MDC ministers off the air.

The investigations were so intense that the ZBH management board reportedly approached a mobile cellphone operator to enquire on the number of phone calls made by the suspended managers.

Morgan Tsvangirai has complained about the state-owned media campaign of hate speech against his party. He blamed mainly President Robert Mugabes spokesman and permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information, George Charamba, for being behind the campaign.
