Elephant Boy
(1937) Sabu in his film debut as a young Indian mahout who helps British government conservationists. With Walter Hudd and Allan Jeayes. Here making his screen debut, the young Sabu was discovered when the film crew for Korda's and Flaherty's production arrived in India. Spending over a year on location, Flaherty (a documentary-maker) handed over the plot details to Korda on his return to England. The tale (based on a short story by Kipling) concerns a young Indian elephant-handler, Toomai, who discovers a herd of wild elephants that a group of British conservationists have been looking for. The shots of breathtaking scenery, the animals and Sabu's unaffected performance combine to make this unmissable.

Blanche Fury
(1948) Victorian melodrama starring Valerie Hobson as a young woman whose arrival on a family estate is the catalyst for betrayal.Victorian melodrama starring Valerie Hobson as a young woman whose arrival on a family estate is the catalyst for betrayal, the revelation of old family secrets and murder. Stewart Granger is the scheming illegitimate son who sees Blanche as his way to reclaim what he sees as rightfully his.

A Ticket to Tomahawk
(1950) Dan Dailey plays a travelling gambler and medicine show man inveigled by sure-shot Kit Dodge Jnr to help her father's railroad win its franchise.

I Am Sam
(2001) Sean Penn keeps it simple in a worthy but largely worthwhile tale about a man with a mental age of seven who faces losing his daughter.Sean Penn keeps it simple in a worthy but largely worthwhile tale about a man with a mental age of a seven-year-old who faces losing his daughter
Sean Penn has long been one of the best reasons for going to the movies. From Fast Times At Ridgemont High to Sweet And Lowdown, his list of great performances is lengthier than most actors' CVs. However, while his sophisticated work has garnered him awards at festivals such as Cannes, Berlin and Venice, it has been undervalued in his native America. It's perhaps for this reason that Penn plumped for the showy role of Sam Dawson. Sam is a 40-year-old LA janitor and Beatles obsessive. He also has the same mental age as his seven-year-old daughter, Lucy (Fanning), who was the product of a liaison with a drifter and has been raised by Sam. When the Department Of Child Services gets wind of the situation, Sam is faced with the prospect of losing his daughter. Well intentioned but imbecilic, Sam doesn't have a leg to stand on until Michelle Pfeiffer's crusading high-powered lawyer Rita Harrison (note Beatles references) agrees to help him fight his corner.
That I Am Sam takes place in a world where an off-form Pfeiffer plays a legal whiz is by no means its only problem. Penn, following in the footsteps of other Hollywood actors who've garnered acclaim by worthy turns as the mentally disabled (Hoffman in Rain Man, Hanks in Forrest Gump etc), presents his character as a good-hearted simpleton - who talks like he's chewing marbles. As mannered as his work is, Penn creates enough genuinely joyous moments - such as his introduction to Rita - to remind you why he's so revered.

(2004) Kim Basinger stars as Jessica Martin, a teacher kidnapped by vicious criminal Greer, who wants a secret that her husband possesses.A young man receives a phone call from a kidnapped woman and takes it upon himself to rescue her and save her family. Thriller starring Kim Basinger, Jason Statham and William H Macy
Cellular Did Kim Basinger make some sort of Faustian pact to get her mitts on the Best Supporting Actress Oscar? What else could account for the many misfortunes she's suffered since the Academy rewarded her for her fine work in LA Confidential? Besides a messy divorce and a lengthy custody battle, Basinger's post-LA Confidential career has consisted almost exclusively of misfires such as I Dreamed Of Africa and Bless This Child. And on the rare occasion she does get a good part, as in Eminem vehicle 8 Mile, it's seemingly calculated to Cellular is by no means one of Basinger's better movies. However, her performance here does remind you that her stardom isn't entirely based on her face and figure. As Jessica Martin, she plays a devoted mother and wife held hostage by the villainous Greer (Statham). As a bit of a science wiz, Jessica is able to piece together a phone smashed by her captor. She in turn randomly contacts Ryan (Evans), an LA beach boy who she convinces to help both her and her young son, who is the next person on Greer's list. As Ryan applies himself to the task at hand, he uncovers a twisty turny conspiracy.

My Cousin Vinny
(1992) Two teenagers are arrested for murder while on holiday. Unable to afford a proper attorney, they call on the services of their wiseguy cousin.Teenagers Bill and Stan are wrongly arrested for murder while on holiday. Unable to afford a proper attorney they call on the services of their wiseguy cousin. Smart-talking comedy with Joe Pesci in fine form
My Cousin Vinny Two young scallywags are standing trial in the Deep South, having been mistaken for murderers. Fortunately, one of the boys has a cousin who has just completed his bar exams. Unfortunately, Vinny Gambini (Pesci) is a bolshy Brooklynite with less-than-expert knowledge of criminal law. And he's brought his mouthy girlfriend (Tomei) along. The judge (Gwynne) is not impressed. The film relies almost exclusively on over used, lazy stereotypes (Italian New Yorkers, rednecks, the seen-it-all-before judge) for its comedy, but it is perfectly pitched performances that win you over. Tomei is particularly impressive - she steals the show and bagged an Oscar for her trouble.

The New Age
(1994) Married high-flying couple Peter Weller and Judy Davis decide to quit the rat race. Two yuppies take on Tofu after a bout of soul searching with painful results
From Michael Tolkin - the screenwriter of The Player - comes this 1990s version of those kaftan flowing soul-searchers of the late 1960s that usually starred Robert Culp.Californian yuppies Peter and Catharine (Weller and Davis) are loaded but spiritually destitute. When both are freed from their work they set out to inject some meaning into their lives. They open a fatally chic clothes shop (Hip-ocracy), fling themselves into some serious guru abuse and start sleeping around.
An astutely executed satire, it's also a well-performed, ruthless bite at the vacuity of new-age thought. Tolkin's excellent script succesfully conveys the agony of a couple who, by the end of the film, still haven't found what they're looking for.
