(1946) Vincent Price in his first leading part as Nicholas van Ryn, the sinister master of the 19th-century mansion on the Hudson river.A young girl is invited to stay at a stately home only to discover that the owners are far from perfect hosts. Gothic thriller starring Gene Tierney, Walter Huston and Vincent Price, and written and directed by Joseph L Mankiewicz
Dragonwyck For all the young filmmakers hoping to be the next Hitch**** or Scorsese, it's surprising there aren't more people in the world hoping to emulate the success of writer-producer-director Joseph L Mankiewicz. A man who won four Oscars in just two short years (and was nominated for a further six), Mankiewicz's list of important films features such genuine classics as All About Eve, The Ghost And Mrs Muir and Julius Caesar.

Three Coins in the Fountain
(1954) Jean Negulesco directs this romantic drama with a delightful light touch, with the central location Rome as much a star as the three leads. The settings in Rome, captured here in CinemaScope are as much a star of this film as the trio of women (McGuire, Peters and McNamara) who take a trip to the Italian capital and are convinced that tossing coins into the Trevi Fountain will provide the solution to their unfulfilled romantic dreams. Given that this is the stuff of movies, you can pretty much guess the outcome, but the journey to true love is undeniably sweet.

The Last Wagon
(1956) Richard Widmark is the orphaned son of white settlers bought up by the Comanche. After being wrouted by the Apache, the lives of a handful of settlers depend on a white man who has made his home with the Comanche Indians. Western starring Richard Widmark and directed by Delmer Daves
If you've seen A Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies - and if you haven't, try and rectify that immediately - you may remember that the GoodFellas director was keen to champion such underrated talents as Sam Fuller, Ida Lupino and Delmer Daves. The man behind The Last Wagon, Daves made a number of notable films in a wide variety of genres. Demetrius And The Gladiators, 3:10 To Yuma, Dark Passage - it didn't matter whether it was noir mystery, a horse opera or a sword and sandal epic, all could benefit from Daves' efficient direction.

(1996) Arthur Hiller's good natured chase-comedy sees Daniel Miller as an ad-man obsessed with time-keeping.The chase is on when carnival owner Tom Arnold carjacks ad exec David Paymer and five school kids in this frenzied family comedy
Carpool Seattle workaholic Daniel Miller (Paymer) is an ad-man in a hurry. He's about to give the most important client presentation of his career but first he has to fill in for his sick wife on the school run. It's not exactly ideal, but if everything goes to plan he should be able to deliver his two sons and three other neighbourhood kids and still make his meeting in time.

Million Dollar Baby
(2004) Hilary Swank stars in Clint Eastwood's film as a blue-collar woman who believes she can make it to the top in the female boxing ranks. An ageing boxing trainer reluctantly coaches a waitress to fight in the ring. Starring Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman.
Million Dollar Baby Weighing in with a heavyweight work that tops anything he has done since 1992's Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood's boxing saga Million Dollar Baby is a relentlessly unsentimental melodrama that delivers its body-blows when you least expect them. After the somewhat hysterical Mystic River - a flawed work dominated by a powerhouse performance from Sean Penn - this is a far more balanced piece, anchored by three terrific turns and some lean direction from Eastwood.

Heartbreak Ridge
(1986) Clint Eastwood plays a tough Marine drill sergeant at odds with the officers who charge him with whipping a platoon of misfits into shape.A grizzled Nam vet is placed in charge of a platoon of ****y Marine recruits. Military drama produced and directed by leading man Clint Eastwood
The 1980s weren't especially kind to Clint Eastwood. His best pictures either starred someone else - Charlie Parker biopic Bird - or were cruelly overlooked (it wasn't until after Unforgiven won big at the Oscars that people would admit Pale Rider was any good). And as for his bad films, well, there were almost too many to list.

Last Night
(1998) A moving and humorous film about people searching for their perfect last night before the apocalypse.A moving and humorous film about people searching for their perfect last night before the apocalypse
Last Night The world is going to end at midnight. With the final countdown only hours away, the sun is still shining, which is odd. Public services have pretty much collapsed. Stores, restaurants, public transportation - all abandoned. It's impossible to get a taxi. It was a shock when the news was first announced a couple of months earlier. There was panic, confusion and outright denial. Then slowly the terror transformed into acceptance.
