Two Thousand Women
(1944) Frank Launder's film is set in 1944 in a Nazi-run French internment camp for British women caught up in the invasion of Europe.British WWII prisoner of war film, only here the Nazi internment camp in France is for women who end up helping downed RAF men. Phyllis Calvert and Flora Robson star
From The Wooden Horse and Stalag 17 to The Bridge On The River Kwai and The Great Escape, the Second World War POW camp is highly familiar cinematic territory. It's rare for these dramas to feature women however (unless of course you drift into the exploitation territory of stuff like Ilsa, She-Wolf Of The SS). Long before contemporary cinema gave us women's prison camp drama Paradise Road, British studio Gainsborough Pictures produced this surprisingly proto-feminist piece of resolve-encouraging wartime entertainment. Although male critics were sniffy about the film on its release, it was a hit in cinemas which at the time had larger female audiences.

War Of The Wildcats
(1943) John Wayne heads the cast as oilman Dan Somers, whose feud with Hunk Gardner isn't helped by their love for the same woman, Catherine Allen.A cowhand and an oil magnate duke it out in this western drama starring John Wayne
"I don't hate John Wayne because he's a fascist," Orson Welles once remarked. "I hate him because he talks like a baby." The Duke is on fine rusk-munching form in War Of The Wildcats, a western so bland, not even Wayne's hefty presence can elevate it above mere adequacy.

The Pink Panther Strikes Again
(1976) The fifth in the long running Pink Panther series is a gloriously implausible romp, starring Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau. The fifth in the long running Pink Panther series is a gloriously implausible romp, once again starring Sellers and Lom
Having had one many too disastrous dealings with master detective (Sellers, on exquisite form), former Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Lom) has succumbed to stark raving madness. Recovering from his nervous breakdown, he decides to devote his life to annihilating Inspector Clouseau.

Save The Last Dance
(2001) Director Thomas Carter comes up trumps with a 24-carat feel-gooder: Dirty Dancing revisited as an interracial teen flick.Dirty Dancing revisited as interracial teen flick. A middle-class white girl from the suburbs dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. But first she must learn how to be black
A smash hit in the States, where it spent two consecutive weeks at the top of the box office charts, Save The Last Dance is a Romeo and Juliet-style romance in which two teenagers from opposite sides of the tracks are united by their passion for dance.

Days Of Thunder
(1990) Tom Cruise plays Cole Trickle, a young hot-shot stock car racer determined to make it as top gun, but can he make all the right moves?Tom Cruise reunites with Top Gun director Tony Scott and producers Simpson and Bruckheimer for this car-racing action movie that decidedly gets stuck in the pits
Days Of Thunder If Top Gun proved that Tom Cruise and Tony Scott were indeed "up there with the best of the best," this ponderous motorsports retread established that they were just as capable of skidding off the track as well.

(2003) Lars Von Trier's experimental studio-based film with minimal sets stars Nicole Kidman as a woman on the run from gangsters.Lars Von Trier's minimalist piece of filmed theatre sees Nicole Kidman play a fugitive on the run from gangsters, hiding out in a town in America's Rocky Mountains
Dogville After Von Trier's Europa and Golden Heart trilogies comes the beginning of his so-called "USA - land of opportunities" threesome. Particularly inspired by Brecht's 'The Threepenny Opera' - from the revenge theme of the song 'Pirate Jenny' to the pared-down style of production - Dogville will divide audiences right down the middle. But then that's exactly what Von Trier's Palme D'Or-winning Dancer In The Dark did - and it's certainly the appeal of the Danish director's daring brand of experimental cinema. Ever the innovator, to his credit Von Trier has refused to stand still.

Little Norse Prince
(1968) A young orphan defies a demon who's terrorising the people of ancient Scandinavia in this early animation feature from Isao Takahata.A young orphan defies a demon who's terrorising the people of ancient Scandinavia in this early feature from Isao Takahata, later of Studio Ghibli
Little Norse Prince Long before he founded Studio Ghibli with Hayao Miyazaki, and years before his masterpiece Grave Of The Fireflies (1988), Isao Takahata made his feature directing debut on this fantasy adventure for animation studio Toei. Miyazaki was working for Toei at the time, and was an animator on the film. Although the picture has dated and had a troubled production history, there's definite evidence of the hand of these two anime masters.
