Help With New HTPC System Please!!!!!1 - 28-December-2012, 19:13

HI Guys

I would like to say thanks for any advice in advance.

Basically, I am looking to build my own HTPC.

What I want from the system:
  • To be able to watch, pause, forward, record, live digital/satellite tv
  • To be able to use the internet from within the application
  • To watch films from USB/SD Card/ HDD
  • To be able to listen to music and view picture etc

The system I am looking to build is as follows:
  • Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 760G Socket AM3+ VGA DVI HDMI 7.1 Channel Audio
  • AMD Athlon II X2 270 3.4GHz
  • 500Gb Hdd
  • 2 X 4Gb Ram
  • TBS 6981 PCI-E DVB-S2 dual tuner card
  • Asus M5A78L-M LX V2 Socket AM3+ onboard VGA 8 channel Audio
  • KFA2 GT 610 Silent 1GB DDR3 VGA DVI HDMI PCI-E graphics card

My questions are centred around which would be the best software for the to run for me to achieve the best for my needs. Ideally, I would like everything in one package if it is available. watching sly TV, record and rewind, EPG, intelligent schuduling, internet etc..

I am torn between using either
  • Windows 7
  • Linux (ubuntu)

I am thinking of using either:
  • Myth TV
  • DVB Viewer Pro
  • XBMC

I need to have it do it can use cccam or something for csing.

PLease help guys, im soo confused

if you choose linux, be prepared for long run,
you didnt mention vdr , you can see it the section

my advice - try to install linux distro's tailored to HTPC: Mythbuntu, Yavdr, ...
and choose the one you like most

but, i think, even for experienced linux users, it is not so easy to go through all steps, but if you succeed, you will learn much

regarding descrambling, it is next story, it depends if you have own card, or only line to another server will be used, each system has own tool (sasc-ng, sc plugin), maybe full instalation of oscam or cccam will be needed

Windows Media Center can be less pain, but it is closed software, you must pay for it :-), and it will never be as user-changeable as linux
