Looking for motherboard recommendations for vdr - 22-May-2009, 20:34

Hello

Would like to see what people use for motherboards for a VDR tv config.
I would like to use a mini itx board to minimize power and noise.
So small board with following requirements:
  • Fanless or low noise fan
  • board graphic controller with vdi/hdmi connector, with Linux VDR/Xorg support for H.264 ( HDTV 1080p, DVB-S2 video capable + blu-ray video format)
  • Audio either via HDMI or digital out
  • PCI slot capable of using riser/extender card to support at least 2 PCI slots for DVB tuners
  • IDE for blu-ray player and Flash drive
  • Sata for disk (recording)
How much memory should it support, would 2G be enough, would like to use inram filesystem booted from flash.
For video I get the impression that either Nvidia or Intel based chips should be preferred.

Some boards have a LVDS interface, can this be used as extra front panel display?

I had a look at Jetway's J9F2-KHDE board, looks good. Any experiences on this board?

From the various forums I get the impression that the video drivers support for via boards is a nightmare, same for ati based boards.

Looking forward to some feedback.

Any motherboard with a Geforce 8X00 or Geforce 9X00 will do just fine. It allows you hardware accelerated through VDPAU using VDR (with vdr-xine) or XBMC.

An alternative would be a Nvidia ION board in combination with an Atom. It's low profile and you can use USB based DVB adapters for the receiving part.

I have not been able to find a ITX form factor board that with a Nvidia ion and ATOM processor combination
Have opted for a NC62K board from Jetway. Relatively old board. Will receive it in the coming week.

Also have found a very nice case that has the ability to use two pci cards via a PCI riser card.
Nice and small with enough space to fit things in nicely.
See http://www.g-alantic.com.tw/g-ga630ibk.htm.
I have not found a reseller in Europe and am trying to persuade the manufacturer to open up an order channel directly to europe by using paypal payment to keep the costs down.

There is a ITX formfactor ION board available in the Netherlands (which I think you're from concerning your nick). It's called the POV/ION330 (or Point of View Nvidia Ion Mainboard POV/ION330) and it costs around 135 Euro's excluding shipping. There's also the Zotac IONITX-B-E and the Zotac IONITX-A-E but both of these boards are based upon Atom/ION and only seem to have USB and no PCI cards.

There is a nice min hptv cade on ebay(UK) at the moment . Will hold micro ATX and mini ITX boards. Price is good, no power supply with it.
I have no connections with the seller, just want to pass on a good opportunity

Hi shalafi, pietjepuk,

I'm (also) looking to buy a Point of View Ion 330, Atom 330, 2xDDR2, PCIe,mITX.

You can use a PCIe => PCI converter but it might become to high to fit in a case. Otherwise, like shalafi already said, you could go for USB DVB receivers.

For me the ultimate dream setup would be a LINUX/XBMC/touchscreen setup, I don't care much about a dual tuner setup, timeshift or anything. I'm also not patient enough to wait around for PCIe DVB-C cards (I know there's a SAT version out) or Nvidia ION 2+ PCI mobo's.

As for the case, well that's easy :) there can only be one..

Thanks for the G-Alantic Enterprise Co., Ltd. link by the way, good stuff.

Here is my set up so far, waiting for the case to arrive.
Got mythtv up, and got it to run. Still having problems with it, some channels it locks up. It works with sasc-ng and cccam.

I guess you need the image stored on the web somewhere.. So upload it first. Then you can use the UBB code [IMG] around the http link.

Hello, I have the POV/ION330 board, it has the ION plataform.

I want to add DVB-T and a DVB-S2 card, but it only has one PCIe (x16) connector.

Do you know a combined PCIe card?

I am looking for the Tevii S470 for DVB-S2 card, it will run nice?

Thanks for all!!!
