Lightbulb Delay decrypted stream for slow servers? - 25-July-2008, 21:59

Hi,

I was wondering, is it possible to delay stream decryption on dreambox softcams to avoid freezing by slow servers? Something like having the softcam working on the "real time" stream in order to request the key as soon as possible and storing the decrypted stream in a buffer (hard disk) to be played in a "time shift" fashion?

Just wondering...

Risking getting myself off topic, I tried the following brute force approach and it worked. To test the idea of giving some time for the slow server to reply, I used two receivers with softcams both of them watching the same channel but the second one in timeshift mode (small delay) and using as uplink the first receiver. The first receiver suffered from occasional "freeze" from the slow server but the second one (apparently by getting replies from the cache of the first receiver) was "freeze" free. Obviously, this approach must be a very bad idea from network and card point of view, since it may generate double requests (what happens if served from cache?). But if properly implemented in the form of a single user (multi user = pandora's box) proxy for caching and serving keys, it could help off loading servers and allow more distant connections. Alternatively, the same result could arrive by playing a delayed stream with keys fetched using a non-delayed stream on the same receiver without using any proxy.

Very interesting idea. I am new to this, but this is particularly interesting for people like me who live in countries far from Europe where most of the action is. I guess this could also possibly solve being many hops away? Now that you said it, it seems such a good solution that I would be surprised that nobody has programmed it yet!? Unless there are difficulties that I don't realise.
