Smile Help In Connecting USB External HDD - 10-November-2010, 22:48

Hello Guys

I Just Bought USB External 320GB HDD To Run It On My DM800 After I Faild To Find A Power Cable To Connect Internal Sata HDD ( I Have Sata Cable And I Need The Power Cable , But I What Its Name Of This Cable So None Of The Sellers Understode What I Want Exactly ) , Anyway , My Problem Is That When I Connect The HDD My DM800 Recognize It As [ USB (Vender) ] , And I Can't Find Any Options For The HDD In The PB Or Menu

Could You Please Help Me To Connect It ?

By The Way : It Has No Power AC , It Takes The Power From The USB

Is the hard disk formated ?
Open a terminal with your dm800 and give this command:
fdisk -l

what is the output ?

hello , it's formatted on NTFS , and i don't know how to do the step that you said about , i hope if you can explaine more :-) ,and by the way , first time i tried my hdd i've used my nokia 5800 cable , and it worked well on my laptop , not on DM , but i've noticed a usb cable came with it in the lower part of the outer box , it's the first time i see this kind of cables :

i've connected the two usb jacks but still the dm800 can't recognize it as an hdd and theres a sound like ( peep ) appears from the harddisk for several times non stop until i disconnect it , and if i use one jack alone there's no result too , just [ usb ( vender ) ]

i hope if you have more solutions for my issue

I don't think that it has to do with the cable that you connect hdd with dm800.
As I wrote in my previous post try to give the command:
fdisk -l

Normally you should see your hdd listed as a device like:

/dev/sda

After ,you have to mount your hdd partition with mount command.
example:

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt

where /dev/sda1 is the 1st partition of your hdd.

Maybe dm800 has any command menu which can be used for mounting hdd,but I don't know that.
If the kernel of dm800 does not support ntfs you have to format it with linux system file,ext2.

Hope this help
