Looking for a description of the forest please - 23-March-2010, 00:10

Hi there, yes, I am a newbie.
I am trying to get a handle on this cardsharing business.
I want to understand how it works and how to set it up.
Specifically I have a DM500S and want to share with other boxes in my home and then later with neighbours on the internet. Looks like this means I set up a server.
I am IT literate (MS but not so good on Linux) and I understand generally how encryption works by changing codes regularly.

Now, when I start to hunt around for tutorials I find lots of very detailed descriptions of the trees, but nowhere can I find an overview of the forest.
Please would someone be able to describe the big picture in a few paragraphs? Without unexplained acronyms.

Something along the lines of:
To set up an in house (or net wide) server you will need the following boxes (box list options)
These boxes will come with s/w installed. What software?
You will need also the following software packages (list of s/w?)
The general purpose of each of these s/w packages is (purpose of each?)
Where is each package installed?

I find the tutorials are excellent at providing the details of how to install a package - step by step examples with pictures.

Hoping this is not asking too much :)

Ger.

that's for the description of the forest and a few trees. the details of the leaves and flowers can be found on the individual roots under cardsharing tutorials.
