advice for 2 problems??? - 14-April-2009, 22:15

hi there
i am just about to buy a dreambox 500s and i have two problems i need to overcome.
problem1- my pc and laptop do not have the rs232 connection and i have heard there can be issues using a usb to null adapter.

problem 2 connecting the box to the internet is a problem, pc and wireless router upstairs, tv and dreambox downstairs. i have heard that wireless gaming adapters can be used and also powerline ethernet connectors can be used but my pc and router are on different fuses that my dreambox and tv so i don't know if this will work.

can anybody point me in the right direction
cheers owenybhoy

1. no problem, flash using the lan: use search for full tutorial but in short:
unplug the power, hold down the power button on the dreambox plug the power cable back, while still holding down the power button for about 15seconds.
Then you can access the flash menu from an internet browser by typing
http://ipaddress of the dreambox
(to find out the ipaddress, either use a lan scanning tool or just guess it based on your dhcp sequence (i.e if your router dhcp starts at 192.168.0.2, then its likely that if that's the ip of your pc, the ip of your dm would be 192.168.0.3)

2. i would highly recomment trying the powerline ethernet before any wireles option: why? because with wifi, if you turn on any appliance as microwave, you are likely to loose connection, which is a pain if cs'ing. Buy a powerline and try, if it doesn't work, return it. in which case, i could only recomment dragging a rj45 cable

cheers
