Got mine a few of weeks ago, installed PLI Jade Oct 08, bootloader 62 and it was running very cool even on HD Channels. It does not have a hard disk and it was stood on its side next to the TV due to lack of space.

Since then I got a HD TV and then had enough space to put it under the TV, suddenly I got a green screen crash and the unit felt very hot. It was sat on a carpeted floor, I've since spaced it off with a couple of peices of wood and all is well.

My suggestion is to make sure you have one of the latest images as I believe bootloader 70 solves temperature problems on some units. Also make sure it has plenty of ventilation, I would imagine the glass shelf of a TV stand is a good place. I might put mine back on its side, why not give a go? My 500s worked fine on its side for about six years!
