He would do himself a favour and get one. If you were to plug a dreambox directly to the internet then anyone online could change channels or hack it. Not a smart move. A simple €30 from a supermarket would provide a sensible firewall to stop this from happening.

Gentoo Linux - Nexus-s, Linux VDR - 2 x ATSC HD cards, Hauppauge PVR 500 for analog US Cable, 3 x Hauppauge MVP's running Vomp on VDR, UK TV on IPTV.

Not a single sat dish at the moment. :-(

many routers support ddns (like dyndns.org) so you can set it in your router and you can shut down your pc (if you forward your adsl to your dream via pc ethernet you can't swish off your pc it must still runing 24/7)

I'm stuck in the same boat, trying to get gbox to work without a router.. just using an ethernet card for net access.. Lads even though it's safer with a router, can one still get gbox to work without one.. just with an ethernet card? Thanks

Yes it's possible.
But to repeat what has been said: it is a huge security issue (even a pc directly connected to the internet is never a good idea)
