Smile DVI vs HDMI - 11-March-2008, 18:28

The DVI protocol first designed for computers (PC) interface.
It transfers ONLY image (NO SOUND).
The DVI protocol has two(2) prototypes:
DVI Single Link (That means supports only up to 1440x1080 resolution)
DVI Dual Link (That means supports up to 2046x1560 resolution)
It DOESN'T support HDCP.

The HDMI protocol has been designed for consumer devices.
It transfers IMAGE and SOUND.
It support resolution up to 1920x1080p (P=Progressive)
It SUPPORT HDCP.

Today the consumer devices usually use HDMI (Because of HDCP=High Definition Copy Protection).

so will a convert make it support HDCP? from what i heard is, theres a certain DVI (the one which hte 800/8000 will use) which does support HDCP.

It must do, otherwise what the heck is the point in the new Dm's including a HD tuner if you cannot use HD?

something must be possible, and as for sound you just use audio out to the tv

I think the Darkshadder has right ,what is the point of HD , if tomorow the broadcoast providers decide to use only HDCP?
I think everybody need a real explanation.

let me tell u a story .once ther was a guy who had a pc with a bleu ray player in it (medion 8828) who wanted to try if dvi with a hdmi plug (verloop dvi hdmi) who put the harry potter blu ray disk in his pc and had a very good signal on his tv (1080i phillps ambilight) .so i do think that the latest potter has al the encryptions on it . well id did work and i had no problems with it .

before i started out to experiment i thought well this wont work but id did .not even a downscaling to 576p.

btw you dont need a dvi cable but a plug from dvi to hdmi

DVI and HDMI use exactly the same method of communication. The only real difference between DVI and HDMI is that in the HDMI protocoll also audio is sent, and in the DVI protocoll is no audio.

Furthermore it is no problem at all to send a HDMI signal to whatever connector. A HDMI signal through a DVI connector is not a problem.

HDCP, the nasty copy protection is possible to implement in both protocolls. So DVI with HDCP or HDMI with HDCP, both possible.

According to the datasheet from the processor used by Dream, DVI, HDMI, and HDCP are implemented in the processor.

best regards,
Peter.
