General Questions - How to start? - 02-August-2009, 14:48

Hi everyone, I'm very new to all of this and desperately need some kind of an introduction to everything...

First: What components does one need for the dreambox? The dreambox itself, a satellite dish, what else? How would one hook up the system?

Second: Do you think starting off with a Dreambox 500s is a smart idea? Does it run on linux?

Third: How does cardsharing work? I have no idea about the processes and how to receive certain programs etc.

Fourth: When setting up the machine, how would I go on about that? Do I need an internet connection for the dreambox or can I download data on my pc and upload it to the dreambox? Where would I find the software/addons necessary?

Cheers!

1. Components

Satellite dish
Motor (optional but highly recommended)
Cable (to connect dish to receiver)
Dreambox receiver

You can either get on the roof yourself or pay someone to do it. Theres a section for installations on the forum for further help in that regard.

2. Dreamboxes do run off linux, yes. DM500's are no longer in production but I couldn't recommend/unrecommend any model as I'm new to this too. I went for a DM600.

3. There is a tutorial on the site with a graphic demonstration as to how it works. Cards go into a computer, that computer distributes the (keycodes) from the card to other computers... all via internet.

4. You need to connect your Dreambox to your router via standard ethernet cable. So you need a router and internet. You can download all software via the forum and install from a PC connected to the Dreambox via the network/ethernet. DM600 does not have any inputs for USB, CD etc... just ethernet.

Thanks a lot for your help!

So did I get this right: To watch via the Dreambox it has to be connected to the internet the whole time?
Can anyone recommend me a good model? Is the Dreambox 600 any good?

And last but not least: Are there different cards I can get? Is there any list of available ones, because I have not found one myself. And can you recommend one?

Cheers!

No,

You don't HAVE to be connected to the internet to watch tv on the dreambox. You can pick up FTA or anything unlocking with softcam keys. However, if you want to use Dreambox for cardsharing then, yes, you do have to be connected to the internet the whole time

there are lots of different cards you can get, here is but one retailer selling cards online
Alsat Offers - Offical Viewing Card and Football

How good a card is very much depends on what you are interested in watching and how much you are prepared to pay for the privilege.

Parkster Mentioned a graphical tutorial on how it works. Can you give me a link to this tutorial as I am quite new myself, doing a little bit of CS but would like to know more.
thanks

Hi guys. Most of you recomment a motor. I was wondering:

Does a motor correct the position of the Dish in case of misalignment ? Does it turn up and down as well (locking on Both Azimuth and Altitude)?

Thanks.

Once the wind did knock my dish slightly out of place so we had to override the locations of each satellite by 1 degree to "cheat" it into working; however this is not ideal and needed to be realigned manually/physically.

When using the motore, the dish will pan East to West in an arc shape (the earth is round), but it does not go up and down. You have to program your receiver with your latitude/longitude co-ordinates for it to work poperly.

Hi Parkster. Thank you.

I have a manual system on my dish. It looks like it is similar. It follows the arc shape. I will attempt to allign it.

Thanks again

Michael
