How to install SATA hard drive into DM600? - 20-August-2009, 21:54

Has anyone ever installed a SATA hard drive into a DM600?

The hard drive I bought did not come with a "SATA - IDE adaptor" or any screws to fit into the hard drive cradle. And the DM600 didn't come with any either! Nor can I see a power cable dangling from the motherboard to put into the Hard Drive!

I imagined the adaptor would be a cable with an IDE plug on one end (to plug into the motherboard) with a SATA connection on the other side..... but looking on e-bay for adaptors it seems that there is a card that fits into the motherboard... so now I'm worried it might not even fit.

There seem to be different types of adaptor on e-bay.... could anyone point to one that they know from experience should fit?

Also, I can't even get to the part of the DM motherboard where the IDE cable plugs in because it is underneath. Presumably I'm going to have to unscrew the front face and take this thing to pieces?

Help muchly appreciated.

The screws you can buy at any computershop.
The flatcable and IDE to sata converter are aslo available in various shops.

And here you can find the fitting instructions.
(this is an IDE drive shown but the SATA is not much different)

Think I've figured out my confusion... the adaptor fits onto the back of the hard drive as per this pic:

http://www.satacables.com/html/IMG_490034.jpg

I was thinking the adaptor plugged into the motherboard... hence my confusion and concern there was no room.

Judging by that video I don't need to plug a power cable into the hard drive. That can't be right surely? I do of course want the answer to be "yes" because I can't see a power cable dangling from the motherboard, just the IDE cable.

You are right, for the notebook IDE drive, there is no powercable needed.
The power is supplied through the interface cable.

Bought my IDE/SATA adaptor. No need for power cable. Just need to find somewhere that sells bloody screws now!

aaaaahhh !!

Finally got my SATA - IDE adaptor after 2 weeks waiting for Hong Kong delivery. Turns out there are two types of IDE and apparently I need the 44 pin variety not the IDE ATA variety. Balls!

For anyone listening... you need this:
7+15 Serial ATA SATA to IDE 44-Pin 2.5 Male Adapter 7D on eBay (end time 01-Oct-09 17:51:32 BST)

not this:
Newest 2.5/3.5 Drive SATA to ATA IDE Converter Adapter on eBay (end time 26-Sep-09 10:43:16 BST)

ask Dreambox, they're the ones who don't put SATA connections on their motherboards

aaghhh !!!

That adaptor I bought connects.... BUT it doesn't physically fit inside the dreambox !!!

I need one that looks like this:
http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/coold...d-drives-4.jpg

But the only place I can find the right adaptor is in USA and they don't ship outside USA. Can anyone point me in the right direction of a retailer? Banging my head against a brick wall with this.
