If you're refering to the conax cas7 "chip pairing" then afaik little is known. A quick examination shows that the services using cas7 appear to decode correctly in any box/server, but the returned DCW is useless (still encrypted in some way) until passed through the additional hardware/software in the paired box. If anyone has any further details I'd be interested as well. The marketing documentation stated at some point that the method was specifically intented to prevent DCW distribution (i.e sharing), and requires extra hardware in the stb.

Here is India, Conax card is paired with the receiver. But the pairing is done at the time of activation. So we can you the card for CS, if we activate using CCcam or anyother softcam.

Previously here (in scandinavia) all operators using conax _claimed_ to require pairing, but there was never any sign of this until recently when they switched to cas7 for HD content.

Before, it didn't really matter if the card was placed in the receiver supposedly required for pairing or not. It worked in newcs/cccam without prior contact with this receiver, but also even after the card had been allegedly paired (e.g used in the mandated receiver for a while).
This leads me to believe either a) this pairing scheme was something 3rd party conax implementations could simply ignore altogether or b) it was all just FUD-tactics on the part of the operators to discourage use of independent receivers.

Cas7 on the other hand seems to be a different story...
