sd or hd? - 12-November-2009, 21:03

hi all

im looking into setting up my first share and was looking at either the dm500 clone or second hand or a dm800hd (mega more expensive) im basicly looking to share sly uk as a main priority.

is it worth starting out with a cheep box or is is something that i should just bite the bullet and go all out for the hd dreambox

cheers roller

neither will share new sky uk white card correctly.
both supply wrong voltage to the card and can overheat it badly..
the 800 can only handle max share of 30 peers
the 500 clone is a nice wee box, but very very restricted because of memory limitations.
best to build yourself a pc linux based server which can be done cheaply using an older P4 as an example.
if your in the uk then your primary watching box should be enigma 2 based, i.e. the 800 or the 7020, with these you will get full 7 day epg using crossepg, you take the shares from your server to primary watching box.
You also can of course build a custom dreambox 600 server, this requires much modding and aint for the faint hearted...hence i recommend the above.
next thing is your share server must remain on 24/7, peers dont like folk who stop sharing their card at night when they turn off the box!

word of caution though!
expect many changes in the sharing scene in the future, we recently lost sky italia, sky uk might go next!

wow cheers mate

yea im in the uk, the whole building a server seems way out of my league at the moment. Say for example i dont have a sky uk card to share could i spend a couple hundred quid on another provider card and put that into an 800hd and run it 24/7 could that get me into a share with other partys for sky without much hassle

cheers roller

not really mate, the 800 is not a good server and not a good receiver to leave on 24/7 without some major cooling modifications, yes the 800 will heat up like an oven...

not many want a share of another provider card, best to get a sky card and put ESPN HD, Full Redhot package or full Setanta Ireland Package on it, these are higly sought after and will be cheaper than other crappy providers..

sharing sceene is not for the faint hearted mate, it will take a wad of cash to get you running and then tomorrow it might stop working!

I personnally use a heavily modded Dreambox 600 as my server, 9modded by myself) and have a 800 heavily modded with cooling as my main, the 600 can handle up to 200 shares/peers if you have the broadband bandwidth, most uk broadband peers struggle with 30 peers because our upload is restricted to 256mb unless your a lucky chappy with fibre..

have a look at this site and get your self a 500s or a 600s to start with

h*tp://www.dvbseller.com/ thats the best place to buy what we call a clone!
