utorrent disrupting cardsharing !! solutions ? - 28-January-2010, 21:26

I have 4 systems connected to the router including the dreambox.

I've discovered that if anyone opens utorrent on one of the PC's, even if its just for a few seconds, it kills cardsharing... but resetting the router fixes all.

Despite this, its proving impossible to police the network, or to be more specific... my dad, so I need another solution. I've tried telling everyone 1000 times not to use utorrent in the day + to reset the router if they do, that doesn't work! I've tried changing the bandwith settings on utorrent to limited peers.... to no avail.

Any ideas?

Just to pre-empt... I realise there are few easy shot comedy replies so do your worst.

To parkster

Lower the upload Bandwith to 10k and alternative upload rate set for 10 as well. It will help.

disable dht and peer exchange. these 2 kill cs (from experience). also cut down connections to 60-100 per computer (depending on the router and the total connections it accepts - ie linksys with new wrt can take up to 4k) and make total connections per torrent 25.

hope this will solve it for you, especially dht and pe.

if all the above fail just set the scheduler in utorrent
set to the early hours when most people are tucked up in bed... say 1am then stop it at say 7am monday-thursday there is a full speed half speed and stop
please note: your ping will show as red in your peers cccaminfo (if the have it set) but if they ping you again at say 9 in the morning all will be good again and over a time will return to green again.
you could post to your peers that you are doing this...
hope this helps in the short term

Hi, thanks for the replies !

Barney - yes, I have tried forwarding utorrent to a specified port but that didn't work

foz - thanks, didn't realise that was there even though I was looking for something like it... the only loophole is that he will can use "force start" to over-ride it... but it will certainly help.....

sakisf - thanks... I have now disabled PE and DHT.... but, I wonder, what are the drawbacks of doing so? To disable "peer exchange" sounds like I am basically disabling utorrent altogether ?

I have also redirected all shortcuts to utorrent to a homemade visual basic program disguised as bittorrent... which allows utorrent to open between 11pm and 9am... and gives a threatening error message if executed during restricted hours

DHT and PE are actually increasing the load of connections that your computer will do in order to get a torrent. They are used mainly in public trackers to decrease the load of the tracker by leaving it to the swarm to update each other on sources.

On home routers (mostly old or not using custom firmware) dht and pe are killing their memory by doing initially almost 200 connections. And cs needs a good number of connections as well (2x peer) so your router is going nuts with both working. Unless you only download only from public trackers and your seeds are rarely more than 10 then you don't really need dht & pe. As you will notice, torrents from private trackers already have dht disabled.

+ you got a shitty router
Many routers cant deal with many (open) connections
If you got a pc left install clarkconnect (or ClearOS which is their new system)on it with 2 networkcards, make that pc the router + you can run cccam on it.
Handling connections goes way better usually.
