Thougts on VU+ Duo - 05-January-2011, 03:33

Having now used this for a while a few thoughts about this
excellent receiver.

Channel Changes are very fast.

Ethernet implementation seems much better than my old
dm800, as well as card readers seeming better, more stable
local card ecm times are down, as well as remote ecm times.

The dm800 seemed to slow down the whole network
when used as CCcam server, ie xbox live ping times were
awful, torrents were slower, in fact every part of the network
seemed to suffer.

The VU+ seems not to impact the rest of the network
anywhere near as much when used as a CCcam server.

Tuners seem more sensitive than alps tuner in dm800.

Flashing this box with a new image is a joy, download the
usb image and put on usb in front usb port, turn machine
off and then on again and it reads and flashes the image from usb.

Bad point, cannot seem to get any image to work with my smargo
but maybe it's just something i'm doing wrong.

Tried various images, but the one i keep coming back to is
VIX 1.3 which just seems to look and work better than most
of the other images, it just seems more polished.

It has 2 epg downloaders RYVIX and CrossEPG
RYVIX seems to be a modded XMLTV import
CrossEPG needs no introduction.

The image supports user choice of where to put the
epg data either hard drive or usb, and the epg works well.

The media player seems very good but only tested it
with one divx movie so far.

It runs cards at a good cool temperature as long as
you don't do any crazy overclocks. It seems the sweet
spot on this receiver for a lot of cards is the standard
3.57mhz and overclocking seems to make ecm times
worse.

At 3.57 setting i am getting ecm times from my local
card that i was getting from an external smargo on
my dm800 set at 6mhz.

Pictures are nice and sharp and autoresolution plugins
as well as video enhancement settings allow for a lot
of tweaking.

Bad points of VIX 1.3 are currently a lack of working skins
and only one type of DTT USB Tuner (sundtek) currently
supported in this image.

All in all the best satellite receiver I have had for many
a year. Let down by looks but not functionallity.

I have had Eagle DM500S clones, Technomate TM9100
and my dm800hd and nothing has seemed as bomb-proof
or easy as this, although this could also be because of
my satisfaction with this image, and it can only get better
with new revisions (hopefully).

I would recommend it to anyone, never had a box that
seems so stable and useable.

Regards

I own my vu+duo for a month and I still working on it, but there's no comparation with my old ibox500s! I love it!! Everything I want to do I can do it! I want to buy soon a TDT usb receiver to try it.

Regards,

Iaki

I am also looking into getting the usb dtt tuner to allow digital terrestrial
but just wondering if it would work for recording too and if i could set prefs
ie if a channel is available on dtt and on sat it would be intelligent enough
to record from dtt still allowing use of both sat tuners.

I have not, but apparently it works absolutely fine.

I prefer that card to be in the original box as its much better
pvr with series link, anytime, great epg, etc etc.

I wish the other boxes could do that.

But for now at least the vu+ is cool with my polish
channel subscription card.
