Unhappy How to get my 7020 going again - 05-October-2009, 19:02

I had been using a gemini image on my 7020 for over a year, a friend set it up for me. It worked fine but I wanted to explore other images and I have now crashed my 7020 as it wont boot up.

I used a program called Flashwizard, with this I formatted a USB stick (sandisc) and loaded the image jade 2 enigma1 I then tryed to reboot the dreambox and part way through it stuck with an error message 'Fatal Error unable to load/find a file......' or similar. The box was frozen so I tryed rebooting but it would not even get this far before freezing again, now all that happens is that the display on the front of the box lights up but stays blank, after about 5 mins it turns into a space invaders game.

As you can see I dont really know what I am doing. But If you dont try something how can you learn? I just hope I haven't Donald Ducked it.

I think what I have done is something like the following;

I guess the dreambox has some sort of flash memory that the gemini software was stored in and it would boot from here whenever it was turned on. The flashwizard program inserted something into the flash memory which says 'Boot from USB instead.........' And it may be that the image I loaded to USB has been corrupted in some way. Even taking the usb stick out wont let the box boot correctly.

I cant log onto the box using FTP as the box gets stuck in its boot process before this option is available.

Is there some reset option option?

I hope there is a simple way out of this. Can anyone help me please?

reprogram the flash and then install Flashwizard on it and then a new image on your USB stick

I am not sure how to do this. Can you please explain in a bit more detail. Thanks

The flashwizard has an option to 'Install firmware onto flash' But I can't use it as the dreambox IP address is not available because it has not booted correctly.

how to flash 7020 flashwiz does not work on 7020
* - (1.) Press and hold the lower frontpanel button.
- (2.) Switch on the dreambox, either by using the powerswitch or, in deep-standby mode,
press the power button. Still, hold the lower button.
- (3.) A text "*** STOP ***" should appear. If something like "/flash".. appears, you didn't
hold the right button. Now you can release the button.
The bootloader entered the "waiting" mode.
- (4.) Above the "*** STOP ***" text, there should appear an IP-address
(four decimal values with a dot in between). If there appears the string "dhcp" instead,
the box still searches for a DHCP server. Wait a bit. If it doesn't change, something doesn't
work with the DHCP server. Check wether network cable is plugged in etc. If it just doesn't
work, set an IP using the serial terminal)

* - Now, open a browser on your PC.
(1.) enter in the address line "http://ip/" (where ip must be replaced with the value in the LCD).
- (2.) on the bottom of the page, there's a link called "firmware upgrade". Click it.

On the next page, you can select the flash image you want to flash. be sure that it has the ".nfi" extension.
You can't flash other images (like .img)!
- Click on "FLASH!" and wait. It might take some time to upload and flash the image.
- Switch the box off again, and on again. The new image should be flashed and working.

Thanks for the advice about flashwiz not being suitable for the 7020. If I ever get my 7020 going again what program should i use?

I have tryed holding the 'down' button on then powering up the box, the LCD display lights up but does not display any text, after a couple of minutes I get the space invaders game back. ( I have tryed this before today and it did not work then either).

I had indeed tryed to load a .img file! maybe this has been the cause of my problem.

I have now got a couple of .nfi files to choose from.

I will have to get a serial cable tomorrow and see if I can communicate with the box that way. Thanks for your suggestion.

WooHoo the 7020 works again!

I used dreamup and a null modem cable, thanks kevinn.

I had to load the original dreambox firmware first, then I was able to mount a different image in the flash memory using dreamup once again. Thats geat!

What software can I use to mount several images in the HDD of the dreambox (7020) that will allow me to choose which one to mount at bootup?

Thanks once more to the people o have helped me with this thread so far.

Regards
dohhomer
