I think what you mean is.....

" is it possible to use dial up/broadband modem instead of broadband router?"

Yes it is possible, even with dialup. However, the problem will arise when portforwarding to your dreambox. As far as I know you cant port forward using dialup or broadband modem, only router.

Please tell us more details......your net connection? the type of isp?

if your dreambox connects to the internet via your pc then your pc has to be online 24/7, then you have to forward the port on your pc to your dreambox.
I don't know how you do that but i suppose it should be possible, what do you use Windows or linux? google "windows internet connection sharing port forward" should do the trick I think :)

for £25 I would go and get a cheap cable router for the following reasons:

1. Windows software firewall is pants!
2. All software firewalls are pants and security risks.
3. NAT (which is what a cheapo router will do for you) is inherintally secure as there is no default route for an incoming packet. All packets need to be forwarded explicitly.
4. Windows behind a firewall is less likely to get a virus (as opposed to about 20 seconds when connected directly and taking a public IP.)
5. You can have 253 different computers connected to the router.
6. It will save you a lot of headaches.
7. It's only about £25.

I am not sure what job you do, but even if you did get software forwarding to work it'll take you hours. Divide £25 by how much you earn per hour to work out whether spening hours hacking it is worth the money or not.. :-)

(Sorry, I really enjoy hacking, especially in linux - but when I was faced with 2 hours to hack a network driver into a system for a client at freelance rates, it was going to cost him less for me to go to PC World and buy one I knew worked..)

Hope this helps.... Any cable modem from PCW will work for you.. And saves you pc from having to be one, plus will make it more secure. While you're at it, you may consider future proofing and getting wireless too - just make sure you stick a lock on it.

yes, you'll have no problems. cs is better on cables, wireless can be flaky inside, especially if you have other 2.4mhz devices like dect phones or video senders.
